CAAOC Winter Hike - Lower Aliso and Scully Ridge in Chino Hills

WINTER HIKE — LOWER ALISO and SCULLY RIDGE in CHINO HILLS STATE PARK
Saturday, February 17th at 9:00 AM

We’ve said goodbye to 2017 and now it’s time plan to get out and enjoy 2018!  So come join your fellow Cornellians for an invigorating and refreshing hike in Chino Hills State Park.  This trail is accessible year round and is a moderate 6.2 mile loop.  Early morning in the winter is the best time to do this hike because most of trail is exposed, and a cool, clear day offers the best views.  It’s a nice three to four hour hike for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels!

Gather family and friends, RSVP with Harris Hunt ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  ), and we’ll see you there!

Potential Weather Park Closure:  The park will close for at least 48 hours following rain of more than one quarter inch. High clay content in the soil causes “greased” trails and roads. Use during this time makes hiking, bicycling and equestrian activities hazardous and causes severe rutting of trail and road surfaces. The park is also closed during times of extreme fire danger, when the National Weather Service announces a Red Flag Warning.

SUMMER HIKE — UPPER BACK BAY, NEWPORT BEACH

Saturday, July 28th at 9:00 AM

Our summer hike is one for all ages.  The Bay Trail Loop in the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve is a very easy and fun five mile loop hike that takes you on trails down along the bluffs overlooking Upper Newport Bay, then back up along the shoreline with world-class wildlife spotting, and then across the Northern edge of the Preserve to San Diego Creek.  This Nature Preserve is home to some 200 bird species, including some endangered species, making it a top bird watching destination.

This hike also features short and long options.  The first three miles will loop to the Southwest along the bluffs and then back up along the shoreline, returning very near the trailhead (at the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center).  The second two mile walk will head to the East, out and back on the bike trail to where San Diego Creek empties into the bay (and where Jamboree crosses over the creek).  This is a particularly sunny hike, which is one reason why we will start early.  The other reason is so we walk the shoreline of the bay at mid-tide.

Start Time: Arrive at the trailhead by 8:45 AM, we will depart promptly at 9:00 AM.

Meeting Location: We will meet at the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve parking lot.  OC Parks map here.

Directions:
Exit CA 73 at Campus Dr. / Irvine Ave.

Head Southwest on Irvine Ave.

Left on University Drive

Right into the Parking Area or Park on the Street

Cornell O.C. Beach Clean-Up

Sunday June 17th

9:00 am -12:00 pm

Volunteer, and make a difference in our community.

The Cornell Alumni Association of Orange County invites you to give back.

Beach cleanups are a fun and easy way to volunteer your time by helping to keep our beaches and ocean clean! We provide the bags, hand sanitizer and a gorgeous view and if you're in need of community service hours we will sign those too. In 2017, volunteers removed over 7,200 lbs of trash…in Huntington Beach alone.

Who: Cornellians, Family and Friends (Children 8 years +)

What: Keep our Beaches and Oceans Clean

When: Sunday, May 13th from 9:00am – 12:00pm

Why: To help create a future

How: By removing trash that affect ocean life.

Directions & Parking:

•Our clean-up has been placed at Tower 10 (see attached map).

•       Huntington State Beach is located at 21601 Pacific Coast Hwy, Huntington Beach, CA, 92646

Event Summary:

Our requested supplies and talk will be at the basketball courts by Tower 10 (see attached map). We are currently transitioning from single use supplies to re-usable supplies. We can provide the  group re-usable bags, grabbers, and gloves to use for your clean-up. At the end of your clean-up, return supplies to the Lifeguard Headquarters building.

Most of the trash you will find on our beach will be small pieces of plastic. These pieces are VITAL to remove during your clean-up as they are generally the most difficult for maintenance crews to remove, take centuries to bio-degrade if they do at all, and pose the largest threat to our wildlife. Many clean-ups ignore these small pieces in search of the "glamourous" large pieces. Even the smallest pieces of trash make a huge difference.

Once you are finished with your clean-up, please deposit your trash in the nearest trash can. As we are using re-usable supplies, please dump out the contents of the bag but keep the bags to return to the Lifeguard Headquarters building.

After your clean-up is over, you are welcome to enjoy the beach after you have worked so hard to keep it clean!

Thank you for becoming a steward of Huntington and Bolsa Chica State Beaches!
