Members of CAAOC, Zinck’s Night is around the corner! Celebrate the honored Cornellian tradition with your fellow Orange County alumni in person. Come join us on 10.19.23 as we step back into the yesteryears and hark back to our shared Cornell experiences.
For the uninitiated, Zinck's Night started out as a recreation of time to trade treasured tales about a cramped bar, a colorful barkeep, and a catchy tune ("We'll all have drinks / At Theodore Zinck's / When I get back next fall!"). For the CAAOC Zinck’s night, we try to capture some of that old magic while infusing the human element that makes up the wonderful alumni of the CAAOC.
Should things go as planned, we will be celebrating our cherished alma mater while also nourishing and sharing the Cornellian spirit that lives within us all. So come one and come all! And remember, the more the merrier! (Friends and family of Cornellians are welcome as always).

A&O Restaurant is located inside of the Balboa Bay Resort, located at 12221 West Coast Highway, Newport Beach. Upon arrival, ask the valet to be directed to A&O Kitchen + Bar. All parking is valet parking. (parking validation will be provided by A&O Kitchen + Bar)

12-15-23 CAAOC Private Boat Tour for Newport Christmas Boat Parade 2023
This year for the holiday season, the Cornell Alumni Association of Orange County will be organizing a private boat tour of the Newport Harbor during the 2023 Christmas Boat Parade event!
Alumnus Elliott Block owns Orange County Charters (https://www.orangecountycharters.com/) and has worked with us to make this event happen. He operates in the Newport Harbor area in a venue that is great for a small group aquatic outings. Check out his website if you would like to see the boat that we will be using to tour around the harbor!

Parking: Parking information will be provided closer to the event.
We will meet at the dock by 4:30 PM to board. At 5:00 PM we will begin our tour of the boats that have lined up for the Christmas Boat Parade. We will also catch the start of the Christmas Boat Parade beginning at 6:30 PM.
Feel free to bring any desired drinks for enjoyment during the tour.

Springtime is one of the happiest times of the year. Let’s welcome Spring 2013 with our 3nd First Thursdays happy hour mixer event. Please join us at one of Laguna Beach’s premier venues – The Deck on Laguna Beach! The Deck is a 2,100 square foot restaurant right above the sand.
Our friends at The Deck have reserved the Green Room are providing free apps and a fantastic menu! All O.C. Cornell Alumni are encouraged to come - the more the merrier so please bring friends and family! - The 401(k) is the dominant form of retirement savings today.
- The average retiree’s 401(k) balance is insufficient to support retirement.
- With any job move, most employees roll over their 401(k) plans into self-directed accounts.
- Rollovers offer the chance to switch from a company’s mutual fund options to individual stocks.
- Most people are unprepared to invest in individual stocks, let alone manage them in a portfolio.
- They are exposed to substantial risk of loss, worsening their situation.
- Sticking with the market averages doesn’t help when one large losing period can set you back dramatically in returns necessary to meet financial goals. What to do?
- Adopt a risk management mindset: Think not how to pick the winners but rather how to avoid the severe losers.
- To do that, follow the revenue, cash flow, inventory, margins, and footnotes (everything that is publicly disclosed) to determine where unsustainable sources of earnings exist. Tom will give examples of the top four indicators and show how to apply these indicators to the following stocks: salesforce.com (CRM), Hewlett-Packard (HP), Crocs (CROX), Juniper Networks (JNPR), Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), Coach (COH)
- After reducing blowup risk, buy on sale: Valuation matters! Determine what a company would pay to buy the company you want to invest in, and then pay less than that. This is your margin of safety.
Speaker Bio:
Tom Jacobs, co-author of What’s Behind the Numbers? A Guide to Exposing Financial Chicanery and Avoiding Huge Losses in Your Portfolio (McGraw-Hill, Oct. 2012), is a seasoned investment expert, whose career includes serving as Portfolio Manager and Advisor for Motley Fool Special Opportunities, as well as managing his own investment firm, The Marfa Group, Inc.
Mr. Jacobs began his career as a high school teacher at several locations in the U.S., Venezuela and Kenya. After receiving his Law Degree, he worked as an Attorney at the prestigious Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom firm in Chicago, then became Assistant Regional Counsel for the US Government. Between 2000-2004, Jacobs worked as a Senior Analyst for Motley Fool, a highly respected multimedia financial services company. In this role, he acted as co-portfolio manager for certain high growth and biotech portfolios. He also appeared on numerous TV and radio shows, and wrote articles as a columnist to better educate the public regarding investment strategies.
The experience of the 2000 crash turned Jacobs to value investing, which he has practiced ever since. After working at a variety of investment-related companies, in 2011 he started his own financial consulting firm, The Marfa Group, Inc.
In 2010, he also returned to Motley Fool Special Ops as a Portfolio Manager and Advisor.
Mr. Jacobs holds B.A. and M.A.T degrees from Cornell University (1977 and 1978), and a Law Degree from the University of Chicago (1987).
